CHAPTER SIX

We returned to the police cruiser in the parking lot to find Sam laying back and puffing on his nasty pipe. Maybe I shouldn't have told him to light it up because he definitely did and now the car reeked of burning tobacco.

"Welcome back," said Sam. "Can we finally get to work?" He exhaled a mouthful of smoke to form little floating rings.

Alice coughed. "Sam put that out! You're killing us!"

"Fine. I'm done with it. For now." Sam extinguished his pipe and slipped it in his jacket pocket. "What do you give a pumpkin who’s trying to quit smoking? A pumpkin patch!" He cackled so hard that he cried and nearly choked to death.

I rolled my eyes. "Is that supposed to be funny? Please keep your day job."

Alice smiled. "It was kinda funny."

"Oh please Alice. You’ll laugh at anything." Both her and Sam were about to aggravate me into tossing the rest of my magic sneezing dust right into their faces. "Drive to Nightshade Lake." I pointed in the direction of the lake.

"Yes ma'am," said Sam. We left Closed Gate Correctional Facility and drove toward Breesa's murder scene.

"What about Starbeams?" said Alice. "You promised us free food and drinks."

I shook my head. "Nothing in life is free. When Sam changes his attitude toward Corky and gives up smoking then I will pay for Starbeams."

"Well then," said Sam. "I guess we won't be going to Starbeams any time soon."

Alice scoffed. "What about me? You can at least buy me a Pumpkin Spice Latte. I haven't done anything wrong."

I exhaled sharply. "Let's go to the lake and then I will buy YOU Starbeams. Deal?"

"Holy big bat!" said Sam. He slammed on the brakes and we skidded to the side of the road. "Look at the size of that monster!" Sam pointed up to some kind of black creature roosting on the branches of a giant Juneberry tree.

Sam rushed out of the car. He pulled his pistol and unloaded a storm of bullets up at the dark winged beast. The creature exploded like a crushed tomato and its body dropped out of the tree and landed near the lake shore.

Alice jumped at the deafening pops of the gunshots and hit her head on the car's roof. "Sam! What the hell?"

"Are you freaking kidding me!" I couldn't believe Sam had just suddenly opened fire on what appeared to be a giant bat.

"I couldn't let it get away," said Sam. "That's our murderer. I just solved this case so be thankful."

"Damn you Sam. You scared the shit out of me!" said Alice.

I bit my lip and restrained my laughter. "Yeah that was pretty scary." The sound of gunshots wasn't new to me and I didn't panic like my sister. “Alice if you need some new panties I think I have a pair in my purse.”

Alice showed me her middle finger. “Not funny Wanda. This is the last time I ride along with you two.”

We'd just arrived at Nightshade Lake when Sam had spotted the bat in the tree.
